Fuel prices at Spanish petrol stations have risen steeply since the outbreak of the Iran war, with diesel costs jumping by more than 20%, according to government figures released on Tuesday.
The country’s economy minister, meanwhile, has said that the government will protect its citizens, businesses and workers against any surge in fuel costs, ‘as we did during the Ukraine war’.
Data from the ecological transition ministry shows that the average price of standard diesel rose from €1.435 per litre on 27 February — the day before the war began — to €1.759 per litre on Monday, marking an increase of 22.6%.
The statistics reflect average prices recorded at service stations across Spain.
Unleaded petrol has also become significantly more expensive. The average price climbed from €1.525 per litre on 27 February to €1.71 per litre on Monday, representing a rise of 12.1%.
The surge in fuel costs followed the start of military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran on 28 February, which triggered waves of retaliatory Iranian attacks across the oil-producing Gulf region.
Oil markets, however, moved lower on Tuesday after a recent spike. Prices dropped following comments from US President Donald Trump, who said the conflict with Iran would ‘end soon’ and signalled that some sanctions on Iranian oil exports could be lifted. Spain relies heavily on imported crude oil, sourcing the majority of its supply from the Americas and Africa as the country has virtually no domestic reserves.
‘What the Spanish government will do is protect citizens, businesses and workers, as we did during the Ukraine war,’ Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo told reporters on Monday, in remarks shared on his X account. ‘We clearly know what measures can be implemented and we will put them on the table depending on how the situation develops,’ he added.
