Local residents in Ibiza block tourist access to idyllic viewpoints

The iconic Mirador des Vedrà viewpoints on the island of Ibiza have recently been blocked by local residents in an effort to reduce the heavy influx of tourists to the environmentally protected area, according to local reports.

For years, visitors have flocked to the idyllic spots overlooking the famous rock formation, which has gained popularity over the years for its ‘Instagrammable’ sunsets. However, this surge in tourism has also led to problems such as overcrowding, parties, increased traffic, littering, vandalism, and even reports of DJ sets and unlicensed mojito sales at nearby viewpoints.

According to Ibiza’s Noudiari news outlet, residents in Cala d’Hort de Sant Josep, near these viewpoints, have taken action by blocking access to car parks and key lookout points, including the well-known Savinar watchtower location (main image).

The report states that locals have placed large rocks in front of ‘unofficial’ parking areas, making it impossible to park close to the viewpoints or even access them on foot.

Speaking to Noudiari, one local shared that many residents have ‘grown tired of allowing these car parks’ to operate without regulation, noting that they are ‘taking up more and more land’.

‘It is private land that they were giving up for this activity,’ the resident said, adding that some visitors also park their vehicles along the road instead of using the informal parking areas.

Despite the area’s environmentally protected status, no official measures have been introduced to curb excessive tourism, and no surveillance has been enforced.

Reports indicate that the local authorities have so far turned a blind eye to the residents’ recent actions to take things into their own hands, blocking the parking spaces near the clifftop and restricting pedestrian access with the large rocks and fencing.
