Spain’s energy minister urges power firms to make last year’s blackout information public

Spain’s Energy Minister Sara Aagesen (main image) on Monday urged electricity companies to disclose all the data they hold on the widespread blackout that struck Spain and Portugal last April, arguing that full transparency is essential to determine its underlying causes.

The power cut, which occurred on 28 April 2025, left vast areas of the Iberian Peninsula without electricity for as long as 16 hours and prompted several investigations by authorities, including the government and the national grid operator. Although these inquiries have identified a voltage surge as the immediate trigger, none has attributed responsibility, and much of the information supplied by companies has been presented anonymously. ALSO READ: Spain’s grid operator and electricity providers exchange accusations over blackout.

‘I take this opportunity to ask companies, since this information (about the outage) is available to them, to please make it public,’ Aagesen told a Senate committee hearing on Monday.

‘I believe it would be best for all citizens,’ she added.

Aagesen also stated that there had been no prior alerts suggesting such a blackout could occur, insisting that existing regulatory and technical safeguards should have been sufficient to prevent it.

‘With the existing regulatory elements and mechanisms, the blackout should not have happened,’ Aagesen said.

She added that Spain’s electricity system is now better equipped to deal with a similar incident and maintained that the country can continue expanding renewable energy capacity without risking another large-scale outage.
