Wildfire in Tres Cantos area of Madrid under control as one fatality confirmed

Firefighters have brought under control a wildfire in the Tres Cantos area, north of Madrid, which claimed one life and forced 180 residents to evacuate, regional officials confirmed on Tuesday.

According to a statement from the Community of Madrid, improved weather conditions overnight helped crews contain the blaze.

Authorities said a man who was airlifted to La Paz hospital with burns covering 98% of his body has died.

The fire scorched more than 1,000 hectares of land.

Spain’s ongoing heatwave persisted on Tuesday, with forecasters from the national meteorological agency AEMET warning that temperatures could climb to 44°C in some areas. ALSO READ: Firefighters struggle to contain blaze near Roman-era heritage site in Castilla y León.

Experts note that increasingly hot, dry summers in the Mediterranean heighten the risk of wildfires. Once ignited, flames can spread quickly through parched vegetation, driven by strong winds and, at times, producing dangerous fire whirls.
