According to Spain’s Meteorological Agency, AEMET, the country’s second heatwave of the summer began on Sunday and is forecast to continue at least until Sunday 10 August (see post below), with temperatures climbing well above what is typical for this time of year.
The forecasts have intensified concerns around public health and the heightened threat of wildfires. ALSO READ: Authorities issue warnings, as Spain & southern Europe hit by summer’s first major heatwave.
According to AEMET, regions in the south and west of the country – including Andalusia and Extremadura – are expected to see temperatures rise beyond 42°C.
The extreme heat has already had fatal consequences: an 85-year-old man from Torremayor, in the province of Badajoz (Extremadura), died on Monday at Hospital Perpetuo Socorro due to heat stroke, emergency services in the region announced. It is the second confirmed heat-related death in the region so far this summer. Over the weekend, temperatures in the area soared to 43.4°C. An orange alert has been issued in eight regions: Andalusia, Aragón, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia and the Community of Madrid. Murcia, meanwhile, remains on yellow alert due to high temperatures.
AEMET, together with Spain’s Health Ministry, has also issued heat alerts for 1,316 municipalities, identifying them as zones where the temperatures pose serious health risks. People living in these areas are being advised to take precautions, such as staying well hydrated and avoiding exposure during the hottest hours of the day.
The soaring temperatures have also led to a spate of wildfires, with emergency crews battling several outbreaks. One particularly large blaze near the town of Vilardevos has already consumed around 570 hectares of land. ALSO READ: Spain and Portugal battle wildfires amid forecast of soaring temperatures.
The heatwave is forecast to persist, with temperatures across Spain expected to remain 5°C to 10°C above seasonal averages.
‘During these days, temperatures are expected to reach 38 to 40 degrees in the northeast and, once again, in the southeast, where they will exceed 42 degrees in the areas around the Guadiana and Guadalquivir rivers, without ruling out the possibility of this happening in low-lying areas of the northern plateau,’ an AEMET statement read.
Meanwhile, Morocco is also grappling with extreme heat, as temperatures in some regions have surpassed 45°C. Warnings have been issued in areas such as Marrakech, Sidi Kacem and Khouribga. However, coastal cities like Rabat and Casablanca have seen some relief thanks to cooling sea breezes, keeping temperatures in those areas between 25°C and 27°C.
