Tremors from 5.5 magnitude earthquake felt in Andalusia and Murcia

Spain’s National Geographic Institute has reported a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that struck early on Monday morning, with its epicentre located in the Mediterranean Sea near Cabo de Palos, off the coast of southeast Spain.

Tremors were left in the region of Murcia and also across several provinces in Andalusia, including Almería, Granada, Málaga, and Jaén.

Seismologists placed the epicentre at a depth of two kilometres and about 32 kilometres away from Níjar in Almería.

The seismic event took place at 7.13am. No material damage has been reported at this time, according to the National Geographic Institute, even in Almería, where the tremors were most strongly experienced.

Residents in parts of Almería and Granada received mobile phone alerts seconds after the quake occurred.

Spanish emergency services confirmed they received approximately 150 calls from concerned citizens in Andalusia and Murcia.

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake is considered moderate but strong enough for people to feel it, although damage to well-built buildings is not common.
