Emergency military units deployed in northern Spain due to ‘Dana’ and heavy rain

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms triggered weather alerts in 25 provinces across Spain on Saturday, with eight of them placed under an amber warning, as per forecasts from the national meteorological agency Aemet.

The region of Aragón had already begun experiencing damage from the severe weather, prompting the deployment of the UME military emergency unit. Several roads were affected by the storms, and the amber alert there was expected to stay in place until 9pm on Saturday.

Among the affected routes was the A-122, which was closed in both directions at Pedrola and Figueruelas due to flooding. Overnight, various municipalities in the Zaragoza province – such as Pradilla de Ebro and Boquiñeni – experienced power outages following a failure in the medium-voltage network. Given the evolving situation, the Aragón regional government was actively monitoring the impact of its ‘Dana’ weather system warnings. The red weather alert issued by Aemet at 11pm on Friday led to the activation of the region’s S-Alert notification system, which issued warnings to people in the affected areas. The alert was lifted around 2am.

According to Aragón’s regional home minister, Roberto Bermúdez, the system proved to be effective. He said that it helped reduce risks and served as ‘a good method of prevention’.

Despite the warnings, the storms caused around 30 weather-related incidents across Aragón during Friday night. Most of them involved water damage and fallen trees, particularly in the centre of Tarazona, which recorded 60mm of rainfall.

Flooding also impacted garages, basements and sports facilities. In the village of Grisen, located in the Ribera Alta del Ebro area, emergency services had to carry out several rescues after people were trapped by rising waters, according to MeteoAragón. A hailstorm later in the evening also caused concern at a local care home.

On Saturday, Aemet issued amber warnings for heavy rain and storms in the provinces of Huesca, Teruel, and Zaragoza (Aragón); Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona (Catalonia); and Castellón (Valencia region).

Aragonese authorities also flagged potential storms in the Pyrenees, where numerous children’s camps are currently in operation. While safety protocols were put in place, no evacuations had so far been deemed necessary. Storms were also expected in Teruel and Alcañiz.

Additional alerts were declared for rainfall and thunderstorms in various other regions: Alicante and Valencia (Valencia); Ribera del Ebro and the Ibérica Riojana areas of La Rioja; Álava, Guipúzcoa, and Bizkaia (Basque Country); Centro de Navarra, Pirineo Navarro, and Ribera del Ebro de Navarra (Navarra); and in Burgos, Palencia, Segovia, and Soria (Castilla y León).

Storm warnings were issued for Mallorca and Menorca (Balearic Islands), and Valladolid (Castilla y León). Meanwhile, high temperatures prompted warnings in Alicante, and warnings for coastal conditions were issued in Almería, Granada, and Málaga (Andalusia).

According to Aemet, the ‘Dana’ weather system that entered Spain’s northwest on Friday was continuing its movement eastward, bringing unstable atmospheric conditions. Cloudy or overcast skies and widespread showers with thunderstorms were expected across the northern half and eastern parts of the mainland, particularly in the northeast.
