Around 15,000 Madrid residents call on local government to resolve ‘housing emergency’

Around 15,000 Madrid residents took to the streets on Sunday in the Spanish capital, calling on the regional government to address what they consider to be a ‘housing emergency’.

Under the slogan ‘Dignified and sustainable housing now!’ (main image), the protest involved 40 different housing, neighbourhood, environmental, human rights, trade union and social groups. Many protesters carried banners saying ‘Derecho a techo’ (‘The right to a roof’).

The demonstration saw a wave of frustration from citizens demanding the right to dignified housing, and who argue that the current housing crisis is forcing them to make impossible choices.

Protesters are calling for immediate action to address rising rental prices, housing shortages, and the impact these issues have on working-class families.

They are urging the regional Madrid government headed by Isabel Díaz Ayuso of the right-wing People’s Party (PP) to take responsibility and act on policies that would alleviate the housing crisis and provide affordable housing for all.

The demonstration comes at a time when the average price of housing in Spain reached a historic high in the last quarter of 2024, 12.5% above the record levels of 2007, according to the ‘Colegio de Registradores’.
