Spain approves Covid booster jabs for all adults aged over 18

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (20 Jan)

Spain has approved Covid-19 booster jabs for all adults over the age of 18. The waiting period to get a third dose has also been reduced from six months after the second dose, to five.

Up to now, the booster jab had only been approved for those aged 40 and above, as well as those who had received a one-dose jab of the Janssen vaccine.

Previous to that, booster jabs had only been offered to those aged over 60, those who originally received the single-dose Janssen vaccine, and people with underlying health conditions, and residents of care homes. It was then extended to all those aged over 40, if they would like it, with it first being administered to those in the 50-59 age bracket.

Spain is also making available a fourth Covid-19 vaccine dose to vulnerable citizens, including those with cancer, who have had a transplant or are receiving dialysis, the health ministry said on Thursday. The ministry said the fourth dose would be given five months after a third dose.

Latest figures (with data collated up to Thursday 13 January) showed that 17,195,074 booster jabs had been administered in Spain. In a separate report, we publish the amount of vaccines administered for each region and its population in Spain, as well as the overall percentage of citizens vaccinated per age group: Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain.
