Spain is to also give a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to care home residents, in addition to organ transplant recipients and other vulnerable groups, the Health Ministry confirmed on Thursday.
Cancer patients undergoing chemo or radiotherapy and people with health conditions that require immunosuppressive treatment will also be eligible for a booster dose, the country’s Public Health Commission said. ALSO READ: Third dose of Covid vaccine to be given to people with weaker immune systems.
The Public Health Commission, in which all the regional authorities and the Ministry of Health are represented, has thus followed the recommendations of the Committee on Vaccines, which had been analysing different proposals according to the available evidence to expand the groups that should receive a third dose of the vaccine.
Care home residents have been included in the groups to receive a third dose to improve immunity against Covid, given their ‘profile of frailty, multiple pathologies and closed environments’, a statement read. Third doses could be administered to care home residents from 4 October.
When the vaccination campaign began on 27 December 2020, care home residents became the first priority group, along with healthcare staff and people with severe disabilities living at home.
