CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 19 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,625,928. This is an overall increase of 6,080 against the figure released on Tuesday, of which 3,054 have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 3,988 over Monday, of which 2,264 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has dropped another three points to 144.56 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days – still below the ‘low risk’ level. On Tuesday it was 147.54 and Monday 151.82.
It remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level only in the Basque Country (266). It is under 100 in seven regions: Valencia (29), the Balearic Islands (44), Murcia (63), Asturias (63), Extremadura (79), the Canary Islands (81) and Galicia (83).
There have now been 68,594 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,625,928. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,951.
There are currently 6,267 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,740 are in intensive care. This represents 17.70% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 19 May is now 79,568 – an increase of 66 since Tuesday. This is now the seventh consecutive day where the number of deaths has been below 100.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 3,054 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 19 May, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,199 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,001)
- 349 in the Basque Country (246)
- 276 in Castilla y León (216)
- 262 in Aragón (131)
- 261 in Andalusia (113)
- 118 in Catalonia (92)
- 100 in the Canary Islands (116)
- 81 in Extremadura (51)
- 71 in Navarra (49)
- 70 in Galicia (35)
- 62 in Murcia (36)
- 60 in the Valencia Region (41)
- 48 in Asturias (47)
- 39 in Cantabria (40)
- 38 in La Rioja (18)
- 13 in the Balearic Islands (11)
- 0 in Castilla La Mancha (0) – no update
- 1 in Ceuta (0)
- 6 in Melilla (21)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 19 May) show that Spain has received 25,572,945 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 22,973,955 jabs have been administered. 15,741,247 people have now received at least one jab, representing 33.2% of the population. 7,469,173 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 15.7% of the population.
