CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 18 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,619,848. This is an overall increase of 3,988 against the figure released on Monday, the lowest for nine months – and of which 2,264 have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Monday had seen an overall increase of 11,061 over Friday, of which 1,170 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has dropped another four points to 147.54 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days – finally taking Spain below the ‘high risk’ level again of 150 overall, for the first time since March. On Monday it was 151.82 and Friday 162.03.
It remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level, however, in the Basque Country (279). It is under 100 in seven regions: Valencia (29), the Balearic Islands (45), Murcia (60), Asturias (69), Extremadura (78), the Canary Islands (84) and Galicia (85).
There have now been 70,010 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,619,848. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,892.
There are currently 6,568 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,774 are in intensive care. This represents 18.03% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday 18 May is now 79,502 – an increase of 70 since Monday. This is now the sixth consecutive day where the number of deaths has been below 100.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 2,264 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 18 May, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,001 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 186)
- 246 in the Basque Country (264)
- 216 in Castilla y León (120)
- 131 in Aragón (62)
- 116 in the Canary Islands (130)
- 113 in Andalusia (77)
- 92 in Catalonia (40)
- 51 in Extremadura (24)
- 49 in Navarra (58)
- 47 in Asturias (40)
- 41 in the Valencia Region (57)
- 40 in Cantabria (26)
- 36 in Murcia (11)
- 35 in Galicia (45)
- 18 in La Rioja (17)
- 11 in the Balearic Islands (10)
- 0 in Castilla La Mancha (0) – no update
- 0 in Ceuta (0)
- 21 in Melilla (3)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 18 May) show that Spain has received 25,572,945 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 22,587,343 jabs have been administered. 15,495,889 people have now received at least one jab, representing 32.7% of the population. 7,323,426 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 15.4% of the population.
