CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 17 March for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,206,116. This is an overall increase of 6,092 against the figure released on Tuesday, with the ministry claiming that 3,064 have occurred in the past 24 hours. Yesterday had seen an overall increase of 4,962 over Monday, with 2,717 in 24 hours.
The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The incidence rate of new cases of Covid-19 is currently not decreasing, and is now 127.91 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. Yesterday it was 127.80 and last Wednesday 139. It remains under 100 in eight regions. It is at its lowest in the Valencia region (39), followed by the Balearic Islands (42), Extremadura (62), Murcia (64), La Rioja (67), Castilla La Mancha (73), Galicia (75) and Cantabria (96).
There have now been 60,150 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,206,116. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,354.
There are currently 8,071 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,997 are in intensive care. This represents 19.93% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 17 March is now 72,793 – an increase of 228 since Tuesday. It is now a total of 405 deaths in the past 7 days.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 3,064 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 17 March, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,310 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,074)
- 307 in the Basque Country (315)
- 231 in the Canary Islands (233)
- 218 in Castilla y León (217)
- 148 in Catalonia (122)
- 147 in Aragón (107)
- 144 in Asturias (109)
- 125 in Andalusia (60)
- 100 in Navarra (68)
- 68 in Galicia (45)
- 53 in Extremadura (97)
- 42 in Cantabria (54)
- 41 in Murcia (74)
- 23 in Castilla La Mancha (14)
- 19 in the Valencia Region (40)
- 18 in the Balearic Islands (15)
- 8 in La Rioja (6)
- 16 in Ceuta (18)
- 46 in Melilla (48)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 17 March) show that Spain has received 7,684,265 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 5,857,085 jabs have been administered. 1,804,615 people have now received a second jab, representing 3.8% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry, in agreement with the majority of Spain’s regional health authorities, has confirmed the perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, (as well as for the ‘San José’ holiday for the regions that celebrate it) in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. The measures apply to all mainland Spain; the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands are exempt from the restrictions. Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain
Spain has again extended its travel ban on arrivals from the UK, as well as from Brazil and South Africa in order to combat the new variants of Covid-19. Also, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
