CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 16 March for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,200,024. This is an overall increase of 4,962 against the figure released on Monday, with the ministry claiming that 2,716 have occurred in the past 24 hours. Yesterday had seen an overall increase of 11,358 over Friday, with 1,122 in 24 hours.
The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The rate of decrease in new cases of Covid-19 for Spain appears to now be levelling off, and is now 127.80 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. Yesterday it was 128.97 and last Tuesday 139. It has actually increased in 11 regions, yet the figure still remains under 100 in eight regions. It is at its lowest in the Balearic Islands (43) and the Valencia region (43), followed by Extremadura (60), Murcia (68), Castilla La Mancha (73), La Rioja (73), Galicia (76) and Cantabria (97).
There have now been 60,101 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,200,024. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,179.
There are currently 8,348 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,037 are in intensive care. This represents 20.24% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday 16 March is now 72,565 – an increase of 141 since Monday. It is now a total of 357 deaths in the past 7 days.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 2,716 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 16 March, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,074 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 183)
- 315 in the Basque Country (208)
- 233 in the Canary Islands (119)
- 217 in Castilla y León (77)
- 122 in Catalonia (63)
- 109 in Asturias (104)
- 107 in Aragón (46)
- 97 in Extremadura (19)
- 74 in Murcia (12)
- 68 in Navarra (40)
- 60 in Andalusia (72)
- 54 in Cantabria (26)
- 45 in Galicia (42)
- 40 in the Valencia Region (56)
- 15 in the Balearic Islands (14)
- 14 in Castilla La Mancha (8)
- 6 in La Rioja (13)
- 18 in Ceuta (9)
- 48 in Melilla (11)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 16 March) show that Spain has received 6,655,195 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 5,742,218 jabs have been administered. 1,728,537 people have now received a second jab, representing 3.6% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry, in agreement with the majority of Spain’s regional health authorities, has confirmed the perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, (as well as for the ‘San José’ holiday for the regions that celebrate it) in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. The measures apply to all mainland Spain; the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands are exempt from the restrictions. Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain
Spain has again extended its travel ban on arrivals from the UK, as well as from Brazil and South Africa in order to combat the new variants of Covid-19. Also, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
