Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Friday that a ‘very substantial’ part of the population of Spain could be vaccinated against Coronavirus (Covid-19) by the end of the first half of 2021.

He was speaking from La Rioja region, where he was presenting his Recovery, Transition and Resilience Plan, during another part of a tour to present the plan to regional governments, and which follows his recent trip to do so in Valencia.

Spain, together with Germany, Sánchez explained, would be the first country in the European Union to have a complete vaccination plan that will allow, ‘in almost any reasonable scenario, a very substantial part of the population to be vaccinated with all guarantees throughout the first half of 2021’. He went on to say that ‘Spain will have a volume of 10% of the total doses committed in the contracts signed by the European Union’.

He explained that his government ‘has been working on this [vaccination] plan since September’ and that ‘we are ready.’ He said that further details of the plan would be released in the coming days.

Sánchez said that the Coronavirus data of recent weeks in Spain was showing a reduction in the accumulated incidence rate, saying that ‘we are on the right path to bend the curve, fulfilling the objective that we have set ourselves: to achieve a cumulative incidence of 25 infections per 100,000 population’. He also insisted on the need to ‘banish any euphoria and be cautious’ in order to beat the virus
