Face masks to also be made compulsory in Balearic Islands – even with social distancing

The Balearic Islands regional government is preparing to make the wearing of face masks compulsory in all public spaces, regardless of social distancing, following the measures taken in Catalonia, and in order to try and prevent any further infections of Coronavirus (Covid-19) on the islands. The measures could come into effect from this weekend.

New outbreaks and ‘lockdowns’

As reported on Monday, two areas in Spain have been forced to reintroduce lockdown measures due to new outbreaks.

Segrià in Lleida, west of Catalonia, went under lockdown from 12 noon on Saturday 4 July, following an increase in the number of new infections registered there. The lockdown will last for an initial 15 days.

Segrià encompasses 38 municipalities, including the city of Lleida itself, and the lockdown will affect around 209,000 people.

Businesses can continue to operate in Segrià, and people are allowed to leave their homes. However, nobody is allowed to enter or leave the area unless for essential reasons or force majeure.

The regional government in Galicia was also forced on Sunday to confine 71,000 residents of the comarca (county) of A Mariña in Lugo, due to new Coronavirus outbreaks in the area.

The measure came into effect at midnight from Sunday night. Citizens will not be able to enter or leave until next Saturday – which is the day before Galicia holds a regional election.

*Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry has now updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for this period in Spain.
