New outbreaks and ‘lockdowns’

As reported yesterday, two areas in Spain have been forced to reintroduce lockdown measures due to new outbreaks.

Segrià in Lleida, Catalonia

The Catalan government ordered the comarca (county) of Segrià in Lleida, west of Catalonia, under lockdown from 12 noon on Saturday 4 July, following an increase in the number of new infections registered there. The lockdown will last for an initial 15 days.

Segrià encompasses 38 municipalities, including the city of Lleida itself, and the lockdown will affect around 209,000 people.

Businesses can continue to operate in Segrià, and people are allowed to leave their homes. However, nobody is allowed to enter or leave the area unless for essential reasons or force majeure.

A Mariña in Lugo, Galicia

The regional government in Galicia was also forced on Sunday to confine 71,000 residents of the comarca (county) of A Mariña in Lugo, due to new Coronavirus outbreaks in the area.

The measure came into effect at midnight from Sunday night. Citizens will not be able to enter or leave until next Saturday – which is the day before Galicia holds a regional election.

*Discrepancies in figures

Although the Health Ministry has now updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for this period in Spain.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) also recently published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 have been 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 is 43,945 higher than in 2019.
