Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory won best film, best director and best actor for Antonio Banderas among a total of 7 awards at last night’s Goyas – the ‘Spanish Oscars’. It also collected the awards for best original screenplay (Almodóvar himself), best editing, best original music, and a best supporting actress award for Julieta Serrano.
The film, also in competition for best foreign film at the Academy Awards this year, is closely based on Almodóvar’s life and work – a ‘thinly disguised autobiography’.

Alejandro Amenábar’s Spanish Civil War epic While at War (Mientras dure la guerra) had received 17 Goya nominations ahead of Pain and Glory’s 16. In the end it won 5 awards for best production design, art direction, best makeup and hair design, best costume design – as well as the best supporting actor Goya for Eduard Fernández.
This year’s Honorary Goya (the lifetime achievement award) went to Pepa Flores, better known as Marisol, a child actress who starred in many musicals in the 1960s and 1970s.

The 34th Goya Awards took place in the south of Spain on Saturday evening to honour the best Spanish films of 2019, presented by Andreu Buenafuente and Silvia Abril. The Spanish Film Academy (Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España) chose the Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena basketball arena in the Andalusian city of Malaga.
It was the third time overall and second consecutive time that the ceremony has been held outside of Madrid. The 14th edition was held in Barcelona, and last year’s 33rd edition was held in Seville.
Sunday’s event was attended by Spain’s newly elected prime minister Pedro Sánchez and the new culture minister, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes.
