Confirmed: Catalonia extends Covid restrictions until at least 21 January

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (14 Jan)

The Catalan High Court on Wednesday approved a 14-day extension to the current restrictions imposed by the Catalan government to combat the latest wave of Coronavirus.

The restrictions, which came into force on Christmas Eve and were due to expire on Friday 7 January, are now extended until at least Friday 21 January.

Since Friday 24 December, there has been a 1am-6am curfew across Catalonia in municipalities with over 10,000 inhabitants and an incidence rate of over 250 during seven days, as well as a 10-person limit on social gatherings to stop the spread of Covid-19. The measures are currently affecting 133 cities and towns across Catalonia.

There are also new capacity limits in restaurants, gyms and cultural venues. The limit is 50% for indoor seating areas in restaurants, and 70% for stores, gyms and cultural venues.

Covid-19 vaccination certificates are still required for entry into restaurants and gyms. The court is also allowing a 70% capacity limit for religious and non-religious ceremonies, such as weddings or funerals.

Other restrictions that did not require court approval also continue: the closure of all nighttime venues and a 50% cut to capacity in restaurants.

Figures on Tuesday showed that the incidence rate over 14 days for Catalonia was at 2,614 – with the overall figure for Spain at 2,433. Whilst there was a 21.35% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain, it was at its highest in Catalonia at 41.07%.
