The passage of Storm Kristin brought heavy rain, strong winds, rough seas and snowfall to large parts of Spain on Wednesday, with almost all regions under weather alerts.
Classes were suspended in Extremadura, in Ceuta, and in 77 municipalities across the provinces of Almería, Málaga and Cádiz in Andalusia, as well as in Madrid.
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued special warnings for what was a highly adverse day, with snow at low altitudes and strong winds across wide areas of the country.
Snow on Thursday is forecast to fall in parts of northern Spain where heights are between 600 and 700 metres , according to Aemet, which has warned of potential disruption on major transport routes. Meanwhile, maritime conditions will be particularly severe along Mediterranean coasts, with likely damage to seafront promenades and coastal areas.
By 7pm on Wednesday, snow was affecting 102 roads nationwide, three of them on main highways – particularly the A-6 (Madrid-A Coruña) – although traffic was still possible with caution, according to the traffic authority (DGT), which urged people to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
Late on Wednesday, orange alerts remained in place in Castilla-La Mancha, Jaén, Almería, Alicante and Mallorca. In the Almanzora Valley and Los Vélez areas of Almería, Aemet has issued a red warning for hurricane-force winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour, while in many parts of central and southern Spain gusts are expected to exceed 100 km/h.
Road conditions, which were affected by snowfall in the early hours of Wednesday, improved as the day progressed.
Rail services were also disrupted, particularly in Andalusia, where strong winds meant services between Algeciras (Cádiz) and Antequera (Málaga) were suspended, and there were widespread delays on conventional medium-distance services between Seville and Málaga.
At Palma de Mallorca airport, two outbound flights were cancelled and a further two were diverted to other airports within the Balearic Islands.
Storm Kristin is expected to leave Spain on Thursday but more adverse weather is forecast throughout the week.
