Second volunteer firefighter dies in Castilla y León region – third death from wildfires

A second volunteer firefighter who was injured on Tuesday in the wildfires in the Castilla y León region has died – the third fatality in Spain as a direct result of the current wildfires.

The 36-year-old man had been fighting a blaze that started in Molezuelas de la Carballeda (province of Zamora) and which spread to the province of León, along with another volunteer firefighter who died last Tuesday.

The man had suffered severe burns to 85% of his body, according to Spain’s national broadcaster RTVE. He had been hospitalised since Tuesday at León Hospital and later transferred to the Burns Unit of the Río Hortega Hospital in Valladolid due to the severity of his injuries.

This is now the third fatality related directly to the current wildfires across Spain, after another man died from his injuries in the Tres Cantos blaze, north of Madrid. ALSO READ: Two dead, over 6,000 evacuated, as Spain activates ‘pre-emergency phase’ to combat wildfires.

‘Death strikes us again with the loss of a second volunteer who has lost their life in León,’ Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on social media.

‘All our love and support go to their family and friends in this unbearable moment. We do not forget the injured or the neighbours who are suffering the pain of the fire. All government resources are working to address the difficult situation our country is facing. The threat remains extreme. Thanks to the heroes who continue to face the fire to protect us all,’ he wrote.

The wildfires have burned through around 50,000 hectares in four provinces including Ourense (Galicia), León and Zamora (Castilla y León) and Cáceres (Extremadura). Approximately 9,000 people have now been evacuated from their towns and villages.

A further 20 people have been injured in the blazes, four of whom are in critical condition.
