Illegal extension to 19th century building in Sitges is being demolished

Sitges Town Council has ordered the demolition of an illegal extension to a 19th-century building on the Carrer Carreta, which was owned by Dr. Benaprès and is part of a listed complex.

The demolition work began at the end of November and is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. The decision for it to be demolished culminates a long administrative and judicial process that had been going on for 10 years.

The property had reportedly been altered with unauthorised construction work in the initial plans, which violated the established conservation criteria and did not comply with regulations.

Despite previous notifications and resolutions, the owner did not correct the irregularities, which finally led to the drastic order of demolition.

The work ‘aims to restore urban harmony and protect the historic environment’, but it has also raised questions about the future of the local heritage in the face of urban planning violations.
