Just two weeks ago, at the end of July, a 21-year-old man was seriously injured after the electric scooter that he was riding collided with a truck in Sant Pere de Ribes.
A medical helicopter and two ground units of the Medical Emergency Service (SEM) were sent to the scene, following the accident, and the injured man was taken by helicopter to Bellvitge Hospital.
Just last week, in the Molins neighbourhood of Sitges, a car crashed into a small wall, luckily without any serious consequences, after the driver had to brake suddenly to avoid hitting someone riding an electric scooter.
These are just two examples of collisions that have happened in recent days, but more have been reported.
While electric scooters have gained popularity in recent years as an ecological and efficient alternative for urban transport, their increased use has generated a series of problems on the roads.
One of the main problems is the lack of clear and consistent regulation in most of Catalonia’s towns and cities, which causes some chaos on the sidewalks and streets. Scooter users often don’t respect traffic rules and also drive at high speed on the sidewalks, which endangers pedestrians, especially young children and the elderly.
