During July the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, carried out a simultaneous macro-operation with the aim of detecting illegal tourist accommodation throughout Catalonia – including in Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes.
The inspection campaign was actually carried out during the first seven days of July but it was only last week when the Mossos presented the results.
Specifically, in the South Metropolitan Region, which includes Sitges and Ribes, 14 inspections were carried out, of which three have resulted in penalties, representing a percentage of over 21%.
Throughout Catalonia as a whole, 158 inspections were carried out, with 92 resulting in acts of infringement, exceeding 58%.
The police force, however, has not specified all the towns where the inspections or the sanctions have taken place. In fact, neither the Sitges Town Council nor the Housing Association for Tourist Use of the Hospitality Guild were aware of any action being carried out by the Mossos during the month of July. There are 1,741 tourist accommodation licences in the town, which represent 9% of the total number of homes.
