The Sitges Carnival is dealing with an unexpected matter that has arisen due to an issue across Europe as a whole.
The European Commission has adopted measures to immediately restrict intentionally adding microplastics to products, which are insoluble and resistant to degradation. These microplastics include glitter, a typical ingredient of the Sitges Carnival, not only in the costumes and make-up, but also in large quantities on many of the floats.
The issue has arrived at precisely the moment when the machinery of planning the Carnival 2024 has begun. Last Monday there was already a meeting of the new Commission, formed by the new president, together with all the representatives of the local entities.
The Sitges Carnival, however – to be held from 8-14 February 2024 – will not lose its shine. Whilst the materials in stock can still be used up, the local organisations who decorate the floats will also be sourcing other materials, such as biodegradable glitter, for example, which is more respectful of the environment, ‘easy to apply and easier to remove’ (unlike the one made with microplastics) – although it is also more expensive.
