Four arrested for alleged sexual assault released, after statement ‘contradictions’

The four people arrested for an alleged case of sexual assault on the night of Carnival Tuesday in Sitges were released on Sunday, after the investigator in the case found ‘strong contradictions in the victim’s statements’, as first reported by the digital newspaper El Món.

According to reports, the forensic study ‘did not corroborate the version put forward by the girl who reported the events’. The four arrested were released without precautionary measures.

The four defendants had been in custody of the Mossos d’Esquadra in Vilanova since Wednesday. All statements were taken by Saturday, close to midnight, after several computer problems at the court hearing the alleged case delayed the defendants’ appearance, initially scheduled for Friday.

On Friday morning, those arrested were taken by the Mossos to an apartment on Calle Primer de Maig in Sitges, where the assaults allegedly took place, to collect evidence and follow up on the case.

The statement from the woman who reported the case, however, together with evidence collected, cast doubt on the alleged assault and resulted in the release of the detainees. The four will remain at the disposal of Jury of Instruction number 5 of Vilanova. According to El Món, the forensic report did not detect ‘any typical and usual injury of an assault’ on the victim.
