The labour market in the Garraf area is recovering

The Garraf is a region that appears to be in constant growth. The huge demographic increase that it has experienced in recent years is also translating into a greater boost to employment.

The data proves it: Sitges closed 2022 with a registered unemployment rate of 9.05% (with data from the Hermes Programme of the Barcelona Provincial Council); Sant Pere de Ribes with 12.06%.

The figures are close to those of 2019, leaving behind the two years of the pandemic, in which the unemployment rate had increased by 2.7% on average – although it was still far from the peaks reached during the last economic crisis.

The downward trend in the unemployment rate is comparable to the rest of Catalonia for 2022 (9.69%, according to the Active Population Survey) and across Spain (12.92%).

‘Garraf had been among the last three counties of Catalonia with more unemployment, but it has been gaining position and levelling off at an intermediate level; and the trend is very clear,’ said Isidre Also from the Node Garraf Development Agency. And the reason, according to Also, is the ‘stabilisation of jobs brought about by the new labour reform, especially in the services sector, which until now had a high temporary nature’. Thus, the unemployment rate is also more stable between the different months of the year.
