Storm causes small pieces of the Sitges bell tower to fall

The recent storm and strong winds in Sitges caused small pieces from the bell tower of the main church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla to crash to the ground. No personal injuries or damage were caused, but there was slight damage to the exterior of the bell tower.

Gusts of wind have reached 70 kmh at times during Tuesday afternoon, and which is when a piece of the bell tower came off, which crashed to the Baluard and broke into several pieces.

The storm caused strong waves along the Sitges coastline, which at times covered the breakwaters.

It also affected the sand on the beaches. On Bassa rodona and Estanyol beaches – already punished by a lack of sand – the waves reached the wall of the promenade, sometimes hitting it with force.

As a precaution on Tuesday, the local council closed the stairs of La Punta, both in the access from the Baluard and from La Fragata. This closure also prevented anyone from being in the area at the time that pieces from the bell tower crashed to the ground.
