Statistics to date for 2022 show there is less crime and more arrests in Sitges

Sitges is increasingly a safer municipality – at least according to this year’s crime figures.

Despite receiving a large number of visitors and tourists during 2022, as well as the town hosting important events with large crowds throughout the year, crime figures have improved compared to 2019, the last year without the effect of restrictions due to the pandemic.

The figures up to October were presented at a meeting of the ‘Local Security Board’, held last week, where representatives of Sitges Town Council, the Sitges Local Police, the Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra, and the Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil made an assessment and analysis of what this year’s security has been like in the town.

The data presented at the meeting showed an overall 5.5% reduction in criminal offences up to October compared with the same period for 2019, among which stood out were that crimes against property decreased by 8.8%.

Mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, said that it was ‘positive news that crimes have fallen in general’ and that the figures showed that a very good job was being done in ‘prevention, action and investigation’.

Figures from the Mossos d’Esquadra showed that for the same period, 22% of criminal acts have been solved and arrests have increased by 26% (286 arrests).

In terms of road safety, the data also showed a reduction in accidents, which have dropped by 20% in this same period, and a 25% reduction in hit-and-runs, with the most important aspect being that there were no fatalities.
