158 people have died in Sitges and Ribes with Covid in two years

A total of 83 people from Sitges and 75 from Sant Pere de Ribes have died in the last two years after having contracted Coronavirus. Not all have died from Covid, but as some had become infected with the virus in the terminal stages of their lives they are included in the data of the Catalan Health Department as deaths related to Covid.

The 83 people in Sitges who have lost their lives account for 2.83 per 1,000 inhabitants, while the 75 in Sant Pere de Ribes represent 2.44. In both cases, these figures are lower than the Catalan average, which is 3.48 per 1,000 inhabitants. In the city of Barcelona there have been 4.72. The case of Vilafranca (4 per 1,000) is also particularly high compared to Vilanova (2.40) and Tarragona (1.99).

Most deaths occurred during 2020, especially in the critical Spring period. In Sitges, more than half of the deaths from the virus occurred before Summer 2020. During the months of March, April and May of that year, the overall number of deaths in the municipality doubled that of 2019. The majority of these deaths occurred in nursing homes.

During these two years of the pandemic, there have been 239 deaths of patients at the Sant Camil Hospital with Covid. Some had also contracted the virus in the final phase of their lives.

The worst month since the start of the pandemic was April 2020, when 50 Coronavirus deaths were recorded at the hospital. Right now at Sant Camil there are six people admitted with the virus, one of the lowest figures since the start of the pandemic.
