High increase in rate of vaccinations in Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes

The onset of the sixth wave, the introduction of the Covid passport, the celebration of the Christmas holidays and the scientific evidence that the unvaccinated are more likely to be severely affected by the virus, have all led to an acceleration of jabs in recent weeks. In both Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes, almost as many first doses have been given this December as in the previous three months.

As of 1 December, 21,485 first doses had been administered in Sitges and 23,138 in Sant Pere de Ribes. Today there are 22,379 and 24,163, respectively, representing an increase of 2.51 and 2.75%.

In most cases, they are young people who until now had not paid too much attention to the vaccine, but who, due to the restrictions regarding access to various establishments – despite the latest restrictions – have ended up opting for jabs. On Tuesday, 59 first doses were given, while on the same day in October, there were only six.

There are also booster jabs being administered to the older age groups, with the 50-year-olds having started this past week. 6,480 have already been given in Sitges and 5,945 in Sant Pere de Ribes, representing 22.10% and 19.35% of the total populations.

On Wednesday the CAP in Sitges was holding a third-dose vaccination ‘marathon’ for to those aged over 60 without prior appointment. Vilanova (the civic centre of Sant Joan) and Vilafranca are also nearby vaccination points for a booster dose for those under 60 years of age. Also on Wednesday, the Catalan Health Department announced that those over 40 can now access a booster dose.

Despite the increase in vaccinations in recent weeks, Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes have a lower percentage of vaccinations than the Catalan average. The reason for this difference – which reaches five points – is the high percentage of foreign citizens, as some have been vaccinated in their countries of origin and are not included in the data of the Department of Health.
