Swimmers found a bundle of hashish, weighing about 50 kilos, floating in the water of La Barra beach in Sitges on Sunday morning. The package, which was wrapped with hessian – and which is how drug traffickers usually carry packages by sea – was found at around 11am next to the rocks on the breakwater.
The bathers themselves notified the Mossos d’Esquadra, who arrived to inspect the package, and which was later transferred to the Sitges police station. The agents, along with members of the Maritime Police and Maritime Rescue, inspected the beach area to see if there were any other bundles, but none were found. They also tried to locate any person or boat that could be related to the bundle.
The Catalan police have since opened an investigation to try to clarify the origin of the package, and to find out if there may be any kind of link with a drug trafficking group dedicated to introducing drugs by sea, by unloading packages on the Catalan coast.
