In the last week, seven people from Sitges have been admitted to hospital for Covid-19. These are the first hospitalisations during this latest wave, which has especially affected young people. Sant Camil Hospital has also seen an overall increase in the number of outpatients.
Since mid-April, Sitges had not had more than two people admitted to hospital for Covid simultaneously. Today [Tuesday] sees seven, after the sharp increase in cases recorded over the weekend, in which several people in the municipality had to be admitted with acute symptoms. There had been none on Thursday and Friday, but the alerts increased on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
From Sant Pere de Ribes there are also five people currently admitted to hospital with Coronavirus. This is a figure that has been maintained since the end of last week. But last Tuesday, there was only one.
This increase in hospitalisations is the consequence of the current wave, which has left 528 new positive cases in the first 12 days of July in Sitges and 444 in Sant Pere de Ribes. Initially the cases did not require hospital care, as they were mainly young people, but the evolution of the last few days is generating the first admissions. However, the percentage of hospitalisations compared to the high number of positives is significantly lower than in previous waves.
On Monday there were also 33 outpatients with Covid at Sant Camil Hospital, twice as many as a week ago. A month ago, there were only five, in one of the best figures since the beginning of the pandemic. Since the fiesta of Sant Joan, however, no Coronavirus deaths have been reported at the hospital. Sant Camil has restricted visits to relatives and friends, with the aim of avoiding possible outbreaks within the facilities.
