New face mask rules in Spain

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (7 July)

The Spanish government has passed a new decree to update the rules for wearing face masks. Since Saturday 26 June, the new rules are as follows:

It is no longer compulsory to wear face masks outside if social distancing of 1.5 metres can be maintained between people from different social bubbles.

However, it is compulsory to carry a face mask at all times for situations that arise where they are still required.

It is not compulsory to wear face masks at outdoor cafés if a social distance of 1.5 metres can be respected. Inside bars and restaurants, face masks need to be worn except when eating.

It is still compulsory to wear a face mask in all indoor public spaces, including shops, public offices, on public transport (including the metro, buses, planes, trains and ships) and also outside when there are crowds or when social distancing from other people cannot be maintained.

It is compulsory to wear a face mask at large, open-air events where there are crowds and attendees are not seated. It is not compulsory for events where attendees are seated at least 1.5 metres apart.

It is not compulsory to wear a face mask in a private vehicle if travelling alone or with members of the same household.

It is not compulsory to wear a face mask at the beach, pool or other aquatic areas except for when using common areas such as changing rooms or other enclosed spaces

Care home users, but not workers, are not obliged to wear face masks if over 80% of the people living in the centre are already vaccinated – and which is the case across Spain. Firefighters and other employees spending very long shifts together will also be able to not wear the protection as long as 80% of those working together are already inoculated.
