Nightlife ambience restored in the Carrer Primer de Maig

Carrer Primer de Maig in Sitges, popularly known as ‘Carrer Dos de Maig’ or ‘Carrer del Pecat’ (and even ‘Sin Street’) attracted a large number of visitors on Wednesday night, during the eve of the Sant Joan festival, and on the first week of nightlife bars being able to stay open until 3am. The street offered images of its best moments from years past, with queues forming in order to be able to circulate.

Almost all music bars and clubs – with just a single exception – established an access control system to enter the establishments. The maximum capacity allowed indoors was 50%. This meant several bars would not allow new customers to enter until others had left. This maximum capacity rule, together with the opening hours until 3am (which on weekends in Sitges is extended to 3.30am by virtue of a special permit for tourist towns), meant that the street itself was packed. At times it was difficult to get from the Plaza de la Indústria to the Ribera.

Local Sitges police also deployed surveillance, both with active patrols and other plainclothes officers. The Sant Joan festival was, as a whole, peaceful in Sitges and without notable incidents.
