Andalusia delays relaxing more measures after slow fall of incidence rate

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (1 June)

The Junta de Andalucía has delayed its planned relaxing of further restrictions this week due to concern about the progression of Coronavirus in the region. After participating in the Andalusian governing council meeting on Tuesday, Junta spokesperson Elías Bendodo said that despite the incident rate continuing to fall, its recent progress has been ‘slower than we would like’.

On 25 May, Andalusia had exceeded 10,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic. This is an increase of 52 deaths in region on the previous week. Although the incidence rate continues to fall (to 164.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days), Bendodo stressed that, ‘the pandemic is not over, the virus continues to kill many, many people around the world. We have to remain very vigilant’.

The Junta had been optimistic that it would be possible to reduce restrictions to a level much nearer to post-pandemic normality by late August. However, the minister of the presidency announced: ‘We want to look at the summer with optimism but we have to remain prudent. We have delayed the implementation of the new measures for a week. We are still in phase one of stabilisation because we have not been able to bend the curve and lower the accumulated incidence of 150, which is the challenge we have set for ourselves.’

The new target for moving to phase two of de-escalation that the board has set is for 1 June. This will be dependent on how ‘infections, hospitalisations and admissions evolve,’ said Juanma Moreno, president of the Andalusian government.
