CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 20 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,631,661. This is an overall increase of 5,733 against the figure released on Wednesday, of which 2,816 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 6,080 over Tuesday, of which 3,054 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped another five points to 139.89 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Wednesday it was 144.56 and Tuesday 147.54.

It remains just above the ‘extreme risk’ level only in the Basque Country (252). It is under 100 in seven regions: Valencia (29), the Balearic Islands (42), Murcia (66), Asturias (71), Extremadura (80), Galicia (80) and the Canary Islands (82).

There have now been 66,378 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,631,661. The figure for the past 7 days is 28,801

There are currently 5,950 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,690 are in intensive care. This represents 17.27% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Thursday 20 May is now 79,601 – an increase of 33 since Wednesday, and the lowest daily increase since last August. It is now also the 8th consecutive day where the number of deaths has been below 100.

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 20 May) show that Spain has received 25,572,945 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 23,503,085 jabs have been administered. 16,049,843 people have now received at least one jab, representing 33.8% of the population. 7,697,288 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 16.2% of the population.
