This year’s Corpus Christi in Sitges will have some ‘carpets’ of flowers & petals

With three weeks until the start of Corpus Christi, the commission headed by Angelina Salesas is working to finalise the details of the celebration that this year will be held from 4-13 June.

In a statement shared on social media, the president announced some new features for the celebration that for the second year running will have to adapt to health measures to combat Covid-19, in the line of what we already reported a few weeks ago.

The main events that are traditionally held around the two central days of the Feast of Corpus – on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June – cannot be held, at least not in the same way that they were held in 2019.

Despite this, it has been announced that there will be five of the traditional ‘carpets’ of flowers and petals, distributed in different points of the old town, around the church, the Racó de la Calma, and the Ajuntament (Town Hall), where there will also be held different elements of the annual procession – and where the Gegants (giants) and the Drac (dragon) will have a special role. The gardens of El Retiro will once again host the National Carnation Exhibition that this year reaches the 81st edition.

Many of these details and other issues, such as the design of the poster, or the artist in charge of decorating the ‘Patio Blau’, will be made public on Tuesday 25 May, with the presentation of the full programme.

The event, which will be online, will be carried out in Can Falç, taking advantage of that on the same day and in the same place, the exhibition The Corpus of the People will be inaugurated, to show the work carried out by the Sitgetans around one of the most prominent celebrations on the local calendar.
