Some fans can return to football stadiums in Spain for season finale

Latest: Coronavirus in Spain figures (14 May)

Spain’s Minister for Culture and Sport, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes has said that spectators will be allowed to return to stadiums to watch football matches, at 30% capacity, and only in areas with a Covid-19 incidence rate of less than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Fans have not been allowed into stadiums for 14 months, since the start of the pandemic.

At the moment, with the Covid figures released by the Health Ministry on 12 May, only the Valencia region has an incidence rate lower than 50 (currently at 32). Two league games to be played this coming Sunday, Valencia v Eibar and Villarreal v Sevilla, could have spectators – but only fans from the home teams, to discourage travel. Madrid and Catalonia have incidence rates of 277 and 212, respectively.

The new policy will begin this weekend and allow the final matches of Spain’s La Liga to be watched by local audiences, all wearing face masks, Uribes told reporters. No smoking or eating will be allowed at the stadiums.

Fans will also be able to return to Spain’s basketball league for its playoffs starting at the end of the month.
