Nightlife will be put to the test in Sitges on 20 May

Next Thursday 20 May, the Carrer del Primer de Maig in Sitges will once again be the epicentre of nightlife for a few hours. This will be the case for at least 400 people selected to be part of a clinical trial that aims to reach the necessary conclusions to develop a subsequent plan for the safe return of nightlife activity. The trial was officially announced today by the Sitges Mayor, Aurora Carbonell, and the Secretary General of the Catalan Health Department, Marc Ramentol.

Residents of the counties of Garraf, Alt Penedès and Baix Llobregat, as well as Barcelona and L’Hospitalet, will be able to take part in the trial, under prior registration on the Sitges Town Council website. The test will take place in a perimeter area between Passeig de la Ribera and Plaça de la Indústria.

For those interested in participating, you can click here for the link on the Sitges Town Council website to register.

The five venues participating in the trial are Pachito, Everlasting, Las Vegas, Rich Monkey and Blitz, with no capacity restrictions, but with participants being required to wear the surgical face masks provided by the organisers of the trial. They will only be allowed to be removed whilst drinking.

Volunteers selected for this clinical trial will have to pass an antigen test three hours before the evening starts and repeat it five days later. Health authorities will monitor the participants after 14 days, comparing it to a controlled group with similar characteristics. The trial is costing between 15-18,000 euros, which is to be assumed by Sitges Town Council.

The promoters of the trial are the Town Council, the Catalan Government, the University Research Institute for Primary Care Jordi Gol, and the Association of Bars of Carrer del Pecat, with the collaboration of Fecalon, Pimec and the Guild of Hospitality of Sitges (Gremi d’Hostaleria).

Both the Town Council and the bars on Carrer del Pecat had been working on the proposal for months and were waiting for confirmation from the government. The initiative arises after the tests carried out with the concerts in Barcelona, at the Sala Apolo in December, and the Palau Sant Jordi in March.
