Sitges nightlife event given go-ahead, and it will be an official ‘clinical trial’

The Catalan Health Minister, Alba Vergés, has confirmed the go-ahead for the nightlife trial event in five music bars on the Carrer del Primer de Maig in Sitges. She did so during an interview on Wednesday with Jordi Basté on RAC1 radio, the day after another association that represents nightlife bars announced a similar event for 22 May – this time in different venues and nightclubs in Barcelona. The Barcelona event is yet to be given official approval, however.

Technical teams from the Catalan health and home affairs departments, as well as Sitges Town Council, are preparing the format of the test that will take place in Sitges, in which it is expected that more than 400 attendees will be allowed to participate, spread over five music bars.

All participants will have to undergo antigen tests prior to the event, and which will be funded by Sitges Town Council and monitored by the health teams. The details of the trial – which will take place in the coming weeks – will be announced next week at an event in which the mayor, Aurora Carbonell, and the secretary general of the Catalan health department, Marc Ramentol, are expected to take part.

The Catalan government has granted the Sitges nightlife event the status of a clinical trial, a fact that will require it to have ‘scientific follow-up’. This has meant that the process of confirmation and preparation has been slower, as it requires more preliminary steps and the elaboration of different studies.

The event is promoted by the Sitges Town Council itself, together with the local Association of Music Bars, the Hospitality Guild (Gremi d’Hostaleria), ‘Pimec’ and ‘Fecalón’ (one of the two Catalan boards that represent nightlife venues). For these associations, the performance of the test is of crucial importance with which they want to show that ‘nightlife is safe’.

On Wednesday, the Catalan Secretary of Public Health, Josep Maria Argimon, pointed out that there is no planned date for the re-opening of nightlife, unlike other areas of the hospitality industry (bars and restaurants), or retail establishments or events.
