Books, roses, author signings: Sant Jordi in Sitges reflects pre-pandemic times

Sant Jordi (St.George’s Day) on Friday in Sitges had a feel of the pre-Covid days of normality, reflecting that we are hopefully at the beginning of the end of the pandemic and its restrictions. With people on the street enjoying the sale of books and roses, with author signings and other cultural activities, Sant Jordi 2021 seemed much closer to what was experienced in 2019 than to what was cancelled in 2020.

As in Barcelona and many other towns and cities across Catalonia, people took to the streets again to experience the traditional festive atmosphere of gifting books and roses. Passeig de La Ribera along the seafront attracted the most attention, as is customary, with 24 book and rose stands (six less than two years ago).

For health measures and social distancing, the Town Council had installed an access and exit circuit, complete with gel dispensers. At times, the number of visitors generated a congestion, especially in the afternoon – although still fewer than in previous years.

In addition to the sale of books and roses, La Ribera also hosted a total of 17 local authors and illustrators signing their work.
