The Mossos detain man on ‘search and arrest’ list at the Utopia Hotel

A Special Intervention Group (GEI) of the Catalan police (the Mossos d’Esquadra) detained a man of Spanish nationality at the Utopia Hotel on Wednesday, in the Vinyet neighbourhood of Sitges, and located not far from the promenade.

The individual was accompanied by his partner and verbally threatened the authorities. Despite the current comarca (county) perimeter confinement, the Utopia Hotel has clients staying there, as well as some students from the Institute of the Arts Barcelona.

The Mossos were alerted when, on the daily list that hotels send them with the names of their clients, they observed that one of the names was on the police ‘search and arrest’ list. Before 7am, three police patrols arrived at the hotel. However, because the individual threatened the authorities verbally and refused to come out of his room, the police sought help from the GEI team, in case the suspect was carrying a weapon.

The incident started early in the morning and continued for over an hour, until the GEI team detained the suspect, who allegedly has a criminal record of 34 previous incidents. When the suspect’s partner emerged at the hotel bar to have a coffee, the police took advantage to finally enter the suspect’s room and detain him.
