CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 29 March for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,270,825. This is an overall increase of 15,501 against the figure released on Friday, with the ministry claiming that 1,564 have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Friday had seen an overall increase of 7,586 cases over Thursday, with 3,731 in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The incidence rate of new cases is now 149.26 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, rising for the eighth consecutive time. On Friday it was 138.63 and on Thursday 134.08. It is now above the 250 threshold in Madrid (255) and Navarra (265).
There have now been 70,190 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,270,825. The figure for the past 7 days is 37,674.
There are currently 8,076 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,861 are in intensive care. This represents 18.76% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 29 March is now 75,199– an increase of 189 over the figures released on Friday.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 1,564 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 29 March, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 298 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 486)
- 265 in Madrid (1,345)
- 145 in Castilla y León (289)
- 142 in Navarra (205)
- 111 in Asturias (164)
- 108 in Catalonia (202)
- 100 in the Canary Islands (179)
- 83 in Aragón (163)
- 65 in Cantabria (76)
- 64 in Andalusia (253)
- 58 in the Balearic Islands (18)
- 32 in the Valencia Region (58)
- 30 in Galicia (48)
- 18 in La Rioja (45)
- 15 in Castilla La Mancha (43)
- 12 in Murcia (70)
- 0 in Extremadura (63) – no update today
- 9 in Ceuta (15)
- 9 in Melilla (27)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 29 March) show that Spain has received 8,508,445 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 7,571,439 jabs have been administered. 2,604,209 people have now received a second jab, representing 5.5% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry has confirmed the perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. The measures apply to all mainland Spain; the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands are exempt from the restrictions. Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain
Spain is lifting its travel ban on arrivals from the UK from 30 March. The suspension on arrivals from Brazil and South Africa remain in place until 13 April. Full report here: Spain lifts suspension of arrivals from the UK from 30 March
Also, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
