With 24 March marking the fifth anniversary of the death of the Dutch football legend, John Cruyffthe Sitges Veterans Association paid tribute to him before one of their games played every Saturday throughout the year at the Aiguadolç Municipal pitch.

The event was held in front of the plaque commemorating Johan Cruyff, on the Avenue of the Football Stars, located inside the Sitges stadium.

A simple ceremony, it consisted of unfurling a Dutch flag, together with the presentation of a photograph of the ‘Dream Team’ creator, who brought the first European Cup to the trophy cabinet of FC Barcelona – plus the number 14 he wore as a footballer.

The ‘Cruyffista’, Toni Laurel, one of the tireless members of the Veterans Association, made an emotional address during the act. He stated that ‘it is the fifth tribute we pay to him since the loss, and we wanted to do so at his Avenue of the Football Stars – the Johan Cruyff Passage. We want to express our thanks for all that Johan did for this town and the Aiguadolç Municipal pitch’.

Accompanying the members of the Sitges Veterans Foundation during the tribute were, among others, Johan Cruyff’s grandson, Jesjua Angoy Cruyff, Cruyff’s son-in-law, Todd Beane, and Xavier Laporta, brother of the new Barça president, Joan Laporta.
