CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 26 October for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,098,320. This is an overall increase of 52,188 against the figure released on Friday – although the ministry claims that 5,217 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Of the 52,188 overall increase in confirmed cases since Friday’s figures, 15,657 are in Catalonia, 8,409 in Andalusia, 4,417 in Castilla y León and 3,884 in Madrid.
There have now been 192,893 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,098,320. The figure for the past 7 days is 104,322.
According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 16,008 across Spain – of which 2,163 are in intensive care (UCI). Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.
The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 26 October is now 35,031 – an increase of 279 since Friday. It is a total of 628 deaths in 7 days.
The current known peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.
Increase in infections
Figures released on Friday had shown an overall increase of 19,851 infections against Thursday, with the ministry claiming that 8,293 had occurred in a 24 hour period.
Thursday had seen an overall increase of 20,986 infections against Wednesday – yet 7,953 in a 24 hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.
The current peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period in Spain was on 31 March, when 9,222 new cases were registered.
Of the 5,217 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 26 October, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 891 in the Basque Country (10,831 new cases in past 14 days)
- 762 in Aragón (10,823)
- 633 in Catalonia (44,896)
- 597 in Galicia (6,104)
- 501 in Navarra (7,211)
- 370 in Madrid (27,268)
- 364 in Extremadura (4,458)
- 315 in Andalusia (30,960)
- 247 in Asturias (3,380)
- 164 in Cantabria (1,657)
- 109 in La Rioja (2,167)
- 77 in Castilla La Mancha (8,036)
- 52 in the Balearic Islands (1,959)
- 42 in the Canary Islands (1,667)
- 25 in Murcia (6,087)
- 24 in the Valencia Region (8,557)
- 12 in Castilla y León (15,451)
- 23 in Ceuta (464)
- 9 in Melilla (917)

New ‘State of Alarm’ in Spain
The Spanish government has approved another nationwide State of Alarm to combat further cases of Coronavirus, following an extraordinary cabinet meeting held on Sunday. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nightlife curfews and other restrictions, where required. *Discrepancies in figures
Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for Spain during the first half of this year.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
