CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 29 June for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus only through a PCR test is now 248,970 – an increase of 84 over Sunday.
Of the 84 new cases, 32 are in Andalusia, 15 in Aragón and 11 in Catalonia.
Fernando Simón, director of the Health Ministry’s ‘Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies’, said on Monday that there are also currently 11 areas of ‘active outbreaks’ of ‘special interest’ across Spain – in Huesca, Zaragoza, Lleida, Valladolid, Málaga, Murcia and Galicia.
Asturias, meanwhile, has become the first region in Spain to have gone over 14 days without registering any new cases of Coronavirus.
Sunday’s figure for the daily increase of infections only through PCR testing had been 118 over Saturday. Saturday’s comparative figure had been 191 over Friday. Friday had also been 191.
The current peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period in Spain was on 31 March, when 9,222 new cases were registered (including from PCR and antibody).
The Ministry of Health’s official figures* for Monday 29 June also now show that there have been a total of 28,346 Coronavirus-related deaths in Spain – an increase of 3 in 24 hours – and 12 in the past 7 days.
Sunday’s figures had shown an increase of 2 deaths in 24 hours, and 13 in 7 days. Saturday had shown an increase of 3 deaths in 24 hours, and 13 in 7 days.
The current known peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.

*Discrepancies in figures
Although the Health Ministry has now updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures following on-going discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still huge differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for this period in Spain.

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) also recently published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 have been 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 is 43,945 higher than in 2019.
