CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – today’s figures
The latest official figures* for Coronavirus (Covid-19) released by Spain’s Health Ministry in Madrid at 5pm on Thursday 21 May confirm that 27,940 people have now died from the pandemic in Spain, up by 48 on yesterday – but the figures do not include new data from Catalonia for the past 24 hours, due to ‘problems verifying the data’.
Wednesday had seen an overall increase (for the whole of Spain) of 95 Coronavirus-related deaths over Tuesday. Tuesday had been an increase of 83 over Monday. Monday had been 59.
The current peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.
Official figures released daily by the Spanish Health Ministry are for the total number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus only through a PCR test (polymerase chain reaction). That figure for Thursday 21 May is 233,037 – an increase of 344 over yesterday – but again, these figures do not include new data from Catalonia for the past 24 hours.
Wednesday’s figure for the increase of infections (for the whole of Spain) only through PCR had been 416 over Tuesday. Tuesday’s comparative figure had been 295 over Monday. Monday had been 285.
A total figure also released today by the ministry for those who have tested positive through PCR and antibody testing, however, is 280,117 (233,037 PCR; 47,080 antibody) – again, excluding any new figures from Catalonia.
The current peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period in Spain was on 31 March, when 9,222 new cases were registered (including from PCR and antibody).
The Health Ministry has not released a figure for the number of people who have made a full recovery.

Of the official figures released by the ministry today – and based only on the total 233,037 confirmed cases through PCR testing – there have now been 67,049 cases in the Madrid region and where 8,931 have died (from the total 27,940 across the country). Yesterday’s figure for Catalonia was 55,888 cases and where 6,021 people have died (but this has not yet been updated for 21 May).
There are now 13,421 known cases in the Basque Country (1,483 deaths), 12,547 in Andalusia (1,375), 16,789 in Castilla La Mancha (2,919) and 10,987 in the Valencia region (1,383).
Figures for those infected with Coronavirus in other regions are now as follows: Aragón 5,588 (848 deaths), Asturias 2,374 (307 deaths), Balearic Islands 2,024 (221), Canary Islands 2,307 (155), Cantabria 2,279 (209), Castilla y León 18,627 (1,960), Ceuta 119 (4), Extremadura 3,042 (505), Galicia 9,077 (608), Melilla 121 (2), Murcia 1,570 (149), Navarra 5,195 (506) and La Rioja 4,033 (354).

CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – updates
‘State of Alarm’ extended until 7 June
The Spanish Congress voted on Wednesday to extend the current ‘state of alarm’ in the country until Saturday 7 June. It was due to expire at midnight on 23 May. There were 177 Spanish MPs who voted in favour of the new extension, 162 against, and 11 abstentions.
It is the fifth time that the ‘state of alarm’ has been extended. It will remain in place as Spain also continues to lift lockdown restrictions with its four-phase de-escalation plan. That plan commenced on 4 May and will continue until towards the end of June, when the country hopes to return to a ‘new normality’.

Face masks compulsory from today
It has now become compulsory from today (Thursday) to wear face masks in Spain in closed spaces (including shops and stores), as well as on the street and in public places, if a 2-metre ‘social distance’ cannot be maintained.
The new rule was ordered by the Spanish Health Ministry to further combat the spread of Coronavirus and was published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE).

Preparing for Phase Two …
Many regions of Spain have now proposed to the central Health Ministry that they should move to Phase Two of the government’s four-phase de-escalation of lockdown plan from Monday 25 May.
