Rosalía … one of the stars of the 2020 Pirelli Calendar

Rosalía, the 26-year-old singer from the Catalan town of Sant Esteve Sesrovires, is one of the stars of the 2020 Pirelli Calendar photographed by Paolo Roversi and presented in Verona this week, with a theme based around the character of Juliet from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Last month Rosalía won five Latin Grammy awards, including her latest album El Mal Querer winning Album of the Year – and she has since also picked up two main Grammy nominations, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 26 January 2020.

Presented by the USA Recording Academy to recognise achievements in the music industry, Rosalía will compete for Best New Artist and Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album at the Grammys.

The photo-shoot for the 2020 Pirelli Calendar took place in May and, perhaps surprisingly, it is the first created by an Italian photographer, Paolo Roversi. A passionate opera-lover, he chose Verona, the city that is indelibly tied to the character of Juliet’s fate, as the location. It was also shot in Paris, where Roversi has lived for the past forty years.

The ‘Looking for Juliet’ theme for the 2020 Pirelli Calendar was presented in Verona at the Teatro Filarmonico, drawing inspiration from Shakespeare’s timeless drama. For this 47th edition of the calendar, Roversi said that he has tapped into the ‘Juliet that exists in every woman’.

The American actor and comedian Whoopi Goldberg presided at the presentation, reciting some passages from Shakespeare’s play and sharing some personal reflections on the work.

Rosalía has been photographed for the iconic calendar alongside Claire Foy, Mia Goth, Chris Lee, Indya Moore, Stella Roversi, Yara Shahidi, Kristen Stewart and Emma Watson.

Born in 1993, Rosalía has been credited for ‘modernising flamenco’, mixing it with R&B, hip-hop and electronica.

The 2020 Pirelli Calendar comprises 132 pages, with the monthly calendar on the cover, along with sections of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and fifty-eight photos in both colour and black-and-white capturing the story’s protagonists with the city of Verona as a backdrop.
