La Liga round-up: Gareth Bale scores twice, then sent off

Gareth Bale was sent off during stoppage time after scoring twice to rescue a point for Real Madrid against Villarreal in La Liga on Sunday, with the match ending 2-2.

Coach Zinedine Zidane had said back in July that ‘it would be best for everyone’ if the Bale left the club during the summer, but it was Bale who saved Real Madrid from a damaging defeat before being shown both yellow cards in stoppage time.

Villarreal had taken an early lead through Gerard Moreno but Bale opened his account just before half-time. Moi Gomez put the hosts back in front but Bale hit a late equaliser in the 86th minute.

Gareth Bale becomes only the second Madrid player, after Cristiano Ronaldo, to score a La Liga double and be sent off in the same match this century.

The result sees Madrid climb to fifth in the La Liga table, while Villarreal move to 16th.

Meanwhile with Barcelona also drawing 2-2 away to Osasuna on Saturday, Joao Felix scored his first goal for Atletico Madrid as Diego Simeone‘s side came back from two goals down to beat Eibar 3-2 on Sunday.

It means Atletico have won all of their opening three La Liga games and move five points clear of Barcelona.
